Last February, I opened two memberships. One for me, one for my daughter.

The contract I signed made me financially responsible for both memberships. My daughter used her membership 2 or three times in a 3 month period, then told me she didn't want it anymore. I knew it was too late to cancel, so I just paid for it until my son asked if he could use the membership. I figured there wouldn't be a problem, so I gave him my daughter's access card.

My son used the membership several times until he was approached by Retro Fitness staff telling him he couldn't use my daughter's membership unless I requested to change the name on my daughter's account to his name. I called in and spoke with the General Manager, Kathy Downey. She told me they weren't allowed to do it, but if I sent her an email request, she would try to get permission to make the change. I sent the email and shortly after Kathy emailed me to let me know the change was made.

I continued paying for both memberships until my contract ended. Prior to the end of the contract, I contacted Retro Fitness to ask why I was charged almost $200 for memberships that were $19.99 per month a piece. Kathy told me I had to speak with ABC Financial. I called them and found that I'd been charged a renewal fee and a bunch of other bogus ***.

I called Kathy back at Retro Fitness to complain. At least twice per month after that, I called or emailed her with complaints about the center. In December, I called Kathy and asked how to terminate my memberships. She told me that within 60 days, I had to write to them to let them know I don't want to renew.

She said I could email her, I did. In my email, I specifically requested confirmation so that I would have a paper trail. She never acknowledged. I tried reaching her in January to confirm receipt of my email telling her I didn't want to renew.

She never answered. I tried reaching her in February, in a very nasty email, she finally acknowledged. In her email she told me the account was canceled, that I owed no money and wouldn't be charged anymore. In March, ABC Financial took $137.86 from my account for a Retro Fitness membership!

I emailed Kathy to find out why. She told me she didn't work there anymore but would forward my email to the new General Manager. The new manager, Miranda Rose, emailed me to ask for proof of my request to cancel. I sent her the thread of email between Kathy and I.

Miranda responds to pretty much say "too bad, so sad, you only asked to cancel YOUR membership. Your email didn't say to cancel both memberships that you were financially responsible for, you asked to cancel "the account"...so we're not canceling the second membership. I wrote Miranda Rose back to ask her if you consider both accounts to be separately owned, why is ABC Financial emailing and calling me about my son's account? She said "because they don't have contact information for your son".

I then asked how there's a contract if they don't even know how to reach my son....and I asked for a copy of that contract. Just show me ONE thing showing HE agreed to be financially responsible. I told her I was very vocal about my hatred of Retro Fitness...why would I keep a membership that no one was using with a place that I can't stand? She has ignored me ever since.

ABC Financial is still calling me looking for money from my son, and I'm stuck because I didn't know that accounts and memberships are not the same thing. Since I referred to cancelling "accounts" and Retro Fitness' system doesn't match account and member information, I'm left holding the bag.

I will file bankruptcy before I pay them one thin dime. Even when I was an active member, the last time I set food in their gym was September 2011....5 months before the two memberships I purchased expired.

Monetary Loss: $107.

Location: Washington, District Of Columbia

Honestly a similar situation happened to me. Horrible experience!

I cancelled my account first by sending a email to ABC financial and they told me to go to the gym I signed up in and have it cancelled, which I did. They told me it was cancelled my account online stated cancelled but I kept getting charged and did not realize (which is my fault) but when I did I contacted retro who told me they could not help me and that I would have to contact ABC Financial. I contacted ABC and they basically were so rude and told me I was SOL that instead of cancelling my acct was transferred to another location and that I would have to go there and cancel it and could not refund me for their mistake! SUCH A MESS!

hate this gym! DO NOT GO

C :( The most unprofessional gym. Lacks honesty and integrity.

They arw refusing to cancel my pregnant wife s' membership. She canceled numorous times, still resulting in her being billed for the last 6 months. Its ok, i have a lot more customers with retro , being that i own 6agenda barbershops/salons in the commack northport and huntington area. I will make sure that they hear about these scam artists.

I gotta say, its a good front..its a gym run by high school kids, that have no knowledge or concept of business. And it seems to me that the managers dont excist.

I got lucky and spoke to one girl, she gave me the run around and said shed call back in ten minutes.....im still waiting....thanks retro. Youll be sued or bankrupt soon.

yeah, retro can be a real pain with payment methods, I first started on a 3 month. When I went to renew my membership they tried to charge me the processing and enrollment fee again and the worker at the counter was just sending a stream of BS my way.

I had contacted the GM to take care of the situation for me and now recently I had a problem with a credit card that we had to cancel, the manager said she would waiver the fee for me because we canceled in between a monthly payment. Then ABC retro goes ahead and charges 40$ and now im still dealing with this on going issue

To Sam:

Why didn't she take care of it at the gym? Didn't you see the part where she said they referred her to ABC Financial? The 'Gym' washes their hands of the billing practices. I had/have a membership at Retro since February of 2011. The location was good, at first. Then when the summer hit, they refused to run the Air Conditioning, or turn on the fan to circulate the air. It was over 90 degrees in there. I used the Cardio equiptment. That was upstairs overlooking the rest of the facility. Downstairs they have a 30 foot ceiling fan that is over free-weights for all of the steroid freaks. They don't even break a sweat. They pump a weight once every 10 minutes and spend the rest of the time kissing their reflections in the mirrors.

It makes no sense. I haven't used their facilities since October, 2011. My contract is up, and I emailed Retro and asked what I needed to do to cancel my membership. I got back an automated response saying that someone will get back to me shortly. Nobody ever did. I emailed again. Same thing. Automated response with no follow-up. Finally, I cancelled my card. Now ABC is calling and mailing looking for updated card info to cover the charges. I finally got the chance to speak to them and ask about cancelling, and they told me to send in a written request and allow 60 days for cancellation. They're still sending bills and refuse to cancel...

Very poor business practices on both sides. I think Retro would be much better if they just find another company to do their billing...

Just want you to know that a stranger on the internet (me) read what you wrote and I immediately think of how *** you are. You should be happy the internet is anonymous.

I signed up for retro fitness but was not able to use the gym, paid for the year because that was the agreement, then after 1 year it automatically renews. I was told in order to cancel membership I must write a letter.

I have been trying to cancel my membership since April 2012, its now the end of June and ABC Financial services is still telling me they have not received my cancellation letter. So now I am about to email them my Certified Mail Receipt along with the link for USPS.com stating that it was delivered. And during this waiting I still have to pay for a gym I never used.

"Consumer Sam" = If you try taking care of the bill at a retro fitness facility they direct you to ABC Financials number.

so Retro does you a favor and transfers your daughters account to your son and then you don't want to be held accountable for it. OMG!!

seems you are the one with the issues...teach your children it's ok to falsely use the membership until nabbed...WAY TO GO MOM!!! if you sign a contract you are liable for it....seems like you may be the one with the issues here.

If you had SO many issues with trying to cancel....why didn't you just go in and take care of it at the gym?? Seems like laziness is the true key here.
